Contour privacy

Contour makes no network request of any kind. There is nowhere for your scans to go.

What the app stores: your projects, scans, measurements, photos, notes and reports live on your device. If you turn sync on, they also sync across your own devices through your private iCloud (CloudKit) account. That storage belongs to your Apple ID — I have no access to it and no way to ask for any. With sync off, everything simply stays on the device it was captured on.

What leaves your device: nothing. Contour has no server, no account system, no analytics, no advertising, and no third-party SDKs. It does not phone home, does not check for updates, and does not report crashes to me. This is not a promise about how the data is handled once collected — it is that no collection happens, because the app never opens a connection.

The camera and the scanner: Contour needs the camera and the LiDAR scanner to measure a space, and asks your permission before using them. What they capture becomes the scan, which is stored as described above. Colour is sampled from the camera as you scan so a capture looks like the room it came from; those images are used to colour the scan and are not kept as photographs.

Text in your photos: Contour can read the writing in site photos — a serial plate, a meter reading, a panel schedule — so you can search for it later. That reading is done on your device by Apple's Vision framework. The photo is never uploaded, and neither is the text.

The microphone: if you record a spoken note, the recording is transcribed on your device using Apple's on-device speech recognition, and the text is saved with the scan. Contour asks permission first, and only listens while you are holding the button.

Accounts: there are none. Nothing to sign up for, nothing to delete later.

What you choose to share: exports — PDFs, web pages, spreadsheets, CAD files, 3D models, project archives — are created on your device and handed to the system share sheet. Where they go from there is entirely your decision, and whatever you send them to has its own policy, not mine.

Children: Contour is a measuring tool with no social features, no user-generated content shared between people, and no data collection. It is rated 4+ and there is nothing here that treats children differently, because there is nothing here that treats anyone differently.

Changes: if this policy ever changes it will change on this page, with the date below updated. Since the app collects nothing, the realistic changes are ones that add a capability — and any such change would be described here before it shipped.
